چکیده

A tutorially orientated account of the principles underlying circuit level simulation forms the basis for discussing reliability of circuit level simulation. An outline of equation formulation and time discretisation of the equations is followed by consideration of stability of the numerical integration methods. The precision of simulation, which also depends on the integration methods used, is then discussed, with particular reference to the analysis parameters of the SPICE simulator. A descriptive account of the NewtonRaphson method of solving the nonlinear algebraic equations, derived from the discretised differential equations, is then presented again with relation to SPICE parameters. The reasons for convergence failure in both transient and DC simulation are related to the underlying principles of simulation and possible ill conditioning of the circuit. The paper includes some simple simulation examples of problematic situations.

Some Examples of Kernel-Hacker Informal Correctness Reasoning

I presented an overview of read-copy update (RCU) [22, 17, 11] at the May 2015 Dagstuhl workshop on Compositional Verification Methods for Next-Generation Concurrency, and was pleasantly but profoundly surprised to learn that a number of the formal-verification researchers in attendance were disappointed to have not seen any RCU code. This document is an attempt to give them some degree of sati...

Exploiting Deferred Destruction: An Analysis of Read-Copy-Update Techniques in Operating System Kernels

The performance of synchronization instructions on shared memory multiprocessors (SMMP) has declined dramatically compared to the performance of simple instructions. As a result, operating system developers for SMMPs have sought out synchronization algorithms that avoid using these instructions, especially in commonly executed paths. One such algorithm that has been applied successfully in stat...

The read-copy-update mechanism for supporting real-time applications on shared-memory multiprocessor systems with Linux

D. Guniguntala P. E. McKenney J. Triplett J. Walpole Read-copy update (RCU) is a synchronization mechanism in the Linux TM kernel that provides significant improvements in multiprocessor scalability by eliminating the writer-delay problem of readers-writer locking. RCU implementations to date, however, have had the side effect of expanding non-preemptible regions of code, thereby degrading real...

Applications of RCU

The RCU synchronization mechanism has been the subject of a fair amount of research over the past few years. This paper takes a look at RCU from a application-oriented perspective and surveys the usage of RCU in real-world systems. The first part of this work deals with the Linux RCU API while the second part discusses user-level implementations. In addition, this paper contrasts the advantages...
